Free Spaces in an Aquascape

An attractive layout is characterised by free spaces. They add to the depth perception of a design and provide the fish with additional room to swim. Especially inexperienced aquascapers tend to overdecorate the background of their tank with tall-growing plants, which can makes it look like a green wall. This is unfavourable for the general atmosphere of the design as it gives a sense of stuffiness and confinement, instead of the illusion of depth and spaciousness.

Free spaces can also be realised in the foreground very well, which gives an even stronger sense of depth. However, we should always keep in mind that too many free spaces may look uninspiring due to a lack of variation, thus giving the layout a dull attire. Thus the design should provide for a balanced yet exciting distribution of free spaces and planted or decorated areas.
